Berkeley Lab Scientists Among First Recipients of Director's Award

Life Sciences Division Director, Dr. Gary Karpen, recently announced Berkeley Lab scientists, Manfred Auer, Mina Bissell, and Gabriel Lander are among the first recipients of Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards for Exceptional Achievement.  This program was launched in October 2011 to honor exceptional achievements by laboratory employees advancing the Lab's missions and strategic goals.

Manfred Auer, staff scientist at Donner, received a Scientific Award for his work as part of the Plant Synthetic Biology Team that included Fan Yang, Prajakta Pradhan Mitra, Jin Sun Kim, Keijan Zheng, Jane Lau, Yves Verhertbruggen, and Dominique Loque. This award is given for significant scientific or technical contributions leading to important progress in an area of research or toward completion of a project.

Mina Bissell, Distinguished Scientist at Potter St., received the Berkeley Lab Prize-Lifetime Achievement Award for "her fundamental discoveries in the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) and microenvironment in initiation, promotion and progression of breast cancer." Mina’s pioneering, paradigm-shifting work fits perfectly with the intent of this award, which honors career-spanning exceptional achievements and contributions in science, and in other non-scientific areas.

Gabriel Lander, a biophysicist postdoctoral fellow in the Nogales Lab at Stanley, received an Early Scientific Career Award for "his exceptional scientific progress in our understanding of the eukaryotic proteosome complex architecture and mechanism of function." This award is given for significant scientific or technical contributions leading to important progress in an area of research or toward completion of a project.
Karpen says of his staff, "I am proud that three of these prestigious awards were received by our Life Sciences colleagues."
Congratulations to Manfred, Mina, and Gabriel!!!
