San Francisco City College Students Get Crash Course in Crystallography

Can someone learn protein crystallography in one day? Last Friday the Biotech Club of the City College of San Francisco visited the Advanced Light Source (ALS) to challenge themselves to do just that. As part of their preparation for careers in biotech, the club hosts guest speakers, goes on field trips to institutions and local companies, and organizes study groups. Last week they were hosted by the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology, where they attended a lecture on the basics of crystallography, grew lysozyme crystals in the lab, and then toured the ALS beamlines and learned how to collect data and solve a structure — all in just two hours.
