Distinguished Scientist, Mina Bissell, Gives ‘Women We Admire’ Lecture

Dr. Mina Bissell is one of the three current Distinguished Scientists and the only woman with this honor at Berkeley Lab. Dr. Bissell is a pioneer in breast cancer research, a field in which she pursued the idea that a cancer cell doesn’t automatically become a tumor but depends on the surrounding microenvironment for cues as it progresses, a process that takes decades.

At Berkeley Lab, she was the first director of Cell and Molecular Biology Division and associate lab director for all Life Sciences. She has authored more than 370 publications, trained 90 fellows and graduate students, is a member of nine international scientific boards, and received numerous prestigious awards including the first Lifetime Achievement Award at Berkeley Lab.
